I was reading the ‘Domestic Tourism Survey – Malaysia 2010′ report, published recently by Department of Statistics, Malaysia. The report presents data on the profile and characteristics of domestic visitors for 2010. It is an important report as there are no similar survey has been done to provide an insight into the performance of local tourism industry in Malaysia. We’ve been receiving regular updates on international tourist arrivals or tourist receipts to Malaysia, thanks to the figures collected by the Immigration Department and Tourism Malaysia. But do we know the total number of local tourists, how much they spent, or their most preferred destinations? This publication has all the answers. In this post, I would like to share some interesting figures from the survey:

Domestic tourism in Malaysia is influenced by seasonal (e.g. public holidays and school holidays) and the organisation of large-scale events

On average, 46.8% of Malaysian residents aged 15 years and above made domestic tourism trips in 2010

The highest number of domestic visitors recorded was ini september 2010 with 12.5m visitors and 14.7m trips (in conjunction with Hari Raya)

On the whole, a total of 115.5m domestic visitors were recorded in 2010 with 137.9m trips made. Out of the total, 68% were visitors from urban areas

Domestic visitors spent a total of RM34.7 billion, an increase of 33.5% from 2009. Out of the total, RM17 bil was spent on shopping and transportation. Only 16.1% was spent on accommodation

on average, domestic tourist stayed 2.58 days per trip with an expenditure of RM541

the main purpose of visits by domestic tourist are ‘Visiting friends and relatives’ (70.6%), followed by ‘vacation’ at 18.2%

Top 5 States most visited by domestic visitors – Sarawak, Sabah, Perak, Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan

About 84% of domestic tourists chose to stay with friends and relatives, and only 14.2% prefer to stay in hotels
