Excerpts From Malaysia Domestic Tourism Survey 2010
Posted in Tourism By Lann S. Othmann On October 27, 2011I was reading the ‘Domestic Tourism Survey – Malaysia 2010′ report, published recently by Department of Statistics, Malaysia. The report presents data on the profile and characteristics of domestic visitors for 2010. It is an important report as there are no similar survey has been done to provide an insight into the performance of local tourism industry in Malaysia. We’ve been receiving regular updates on international tourist arrivals or tourist receipts to Malaysia, thanks to the figures collected by the Immigration Department and Tourism Malaysia. But do we know the total number of local tourists, how much they spent, or their most preferred destinations? This publication has all the answers. In this post, I would like to share some interesting figures from the survey:

Top 5 States most visited by domestic visitors – Sarawak, Sabah, Perak, Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan
About 84% of domestic tourists chose to stay with friends and relatives, and only 14.2% prefer to stay in hotels

Salam, and thanks for your informative post. Nice to see that my home state Perak is in the Top 5 most visited by domestic tourists. Even better next year is Visit Perak Year 2012. So things are being spruced up… Moh ke Perak!
Thnx Nadge,
Perak is getting there at the top as they are quite active in promoting tourism, compared to other states in the peninsular. And with the availability of direct train from KL, the accessibility is no longer an issue. Yes, moh ke perak..
Can someone explain to me how we get from 115 million domestic visitors when there are only 28 million people in Malaysia??? There are day visitors and overnight visitors but ultimately, what is the size of the overnight domestic tourists (individuals)? Thanks
