Maxis Offered Free 16GB iPhone 3GS, Too Bad The Online Booking Form Is Scrappy

Yeah, you’re right. The title above is just a gimmick. But Maxis did actually offer a free 16GB iPhone 3GS under it’s iValue 4 rate plan where you have to pay RM375 monthly fee. Other rate plans can be referred in their website that were officially released today. The rate plans are similar to what they offered with the previous iPhone 3G where you have an options of iValue Plan, iData Plan or Prepaid Plan. The iPhone 3GS price varied with different plans that you choose. The original Maxis reserve price for this new iPhone are RM2,490 and RM2,990 for 16GB and 32GB respectively.

The phone itself is only ready for collection starting from 31st July but you can make an online booking to become among the early owner of iPhone 3GS in Malaysia. Maxis asked for RM200 non-refundable online booking charge. However, the online booking page is real-damn-slow at the moment and some of the booking form functionality is not working. And after more than 1 hour trying, I finally got the error message below. So frustrated! I guess Maxis website is now handling traffics more than they can handle.

I’ll write more about Maxis iPhone 3GS later when I’m done with the booking. #%@*&~

update: Finally completed the booking process. Can’t wait to test the new iPhone!

How to Install iPhone 3.0 Firmware on Jailbroken and Unlocked iPhone With Redsn0w

jailbroken iphone 3.0

Introduction

This is a step-by-step guide to upgrade or install your 1st generation iphone firmware to the latest 3.0 firmware. This exercise will use jailbreak+unlock tool i.e redsn0w 0.7.2 released by iphone-dev recently. Please note that for most people, redsn0w 0.7.1 works OK. However, I got problem with 0.7.1 where I got stuck for hours at the jailbreak stage during the upgrading process. But I have to applaud iphone-dev team for a quick fix on this. If everything goes well, it shouldn’t take you more than 20 minutes to finish.

For iphone 3G users, please use ultrasn0w that was also released not long after redsn0w. However, you still have to jailbreak your iphone 3G with redsn0w first before unlock it with ultrasn0w. More info on this here.

Note: This tutorial should be viewed as an exercise by a non-technical iphone owner, like me. The point here is, if I can do it, so can you.

Who Should Read This Guide

This guide is for iphone owners who want to upgrade to the latest iphone 3.0 firmware. This guide is applicable to the following device:

Mini iPhone From China, Anyone?

Not long ago, there are wild rumors about Apple’s plan to produce iPhone Nano, a mini version of iPhone just like iPod Nano. But it turns out that it’s just a wild rumors and Apple itself denied the rumors because it will defeat the purpose of having a wide screen smart phone at a first place. However, at the other parts of the world, some people picked-up the idea and produce the mini version of iPhone and named it -well, a Mini iPhone! And that mini iPhone has crossed the ocean and made it’s way to our shore – Malaysia.

The mini iPhone pictured above is made in China and sold for RM460 ++ at Brem Mall, Kepong. The design is almost similar to iPhone 3G, but of course smaller to give it a mini size. Even though the home screen made to look like iphone, it’s OS is not. Unfortunately, I cannot manage to get the full specs of this phone. However, this mini iPhone is very attractive and it is a touch screen – just enough to cheat your friends that you just bought a rare Mini iPhone that cannot be found even at Apple Store worldwide.

MAXIS, It’s iPhone 3GS (without space), Not 3G S

Screen capture from Maxis website

If everything goes well as planned, tomorrow (July 15th) Maxis will announce some important news about the new iPhone 3GS. Malaysian iPhone owners have to wait until tomorrow to know the new device’s price info, subsidize amount, iPhone 3G upgrade program and  whether Maxis will cut the price of the current iPhone 3G. But before they go any further with the new iPhone promotion, they have to get the name right first! The correct name of this new iPhone should be spelled iPhone 3GS, not iPhone 3G S. Notice the different? There should be no space after 3G character. The first picture above shows screen capture from iPhone 3GS page in Maxis iPhone 3G website. The wrong spelling can be seen throughout Maxis website. It’s even in their iPhone 3GS registration notification . As a comparison, the screen capture below was taken from Apple’s official website.

3gsnospace

Yes, what’s in a name, indeed. But it’s better to get things right before you’ve gone too far when you decided to change it later. In fact, Apple itself initially used iPhone 3G S to mention the new iphone when it was first launched to the public [read the story here]. But later they changed it to iPhone 3GS. Maxis should follow suit. Anyway, I think they have to maintain the spelling consistency with the iPhone manufacturer itself – Apple.

Now can somebody tell Maxis about this? :)

mybeli.com Launch Failed to Meet The Deadline

mybeli

Yesterday – 10th of July, should be the day the new Malaysian shopping portal goes live as suggested by the message captured in it’s website www.mybeli.com above. However, there’s no sign of real content until today. A quick check just now (2:16am, yes..i burnt the midnight oil) found the message has been replaced by Apache Tomcat web server settings information.

I was eager to see the portal since In.Tech reported about it last week. This new shopping portal is a project by PIKOM and they’ve said that this portal launch is timely during the Malaysia Megasale Campaign from 4th July – 31st August. PIKOM website had even put a banner of this portal in their website. Why bother putting a link when it’s not ready? It seems that we have to wait a little longer. Hopefully it will be ready before the Malaysia Megasale Campaign ends.

update: I have just received a reply from PIKOM reps today (July 13th). It seems that the portal will only be ready for consumers on July 31st. Thanks PIKOM for the response. Read an excerpt of the email below:

Hi. Sorry about that. It took about 48 hours for the domain to be fully
available. You can try it now. If you are a merchant, please try
registering.

As a consumer, the site will be officially launched on july 31.
